Description

Pryke's Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century, with mid-20th century extensions at the rear and west end. It has one-and-a-half storeys and features a timber-framed and rendered structure topped with a hipped thatched roof that has a decorated ridge. The internal chimney stack has a plain rebuilt red brick shaft. The ground floor includes small-paned casement windows from the 20th century, while there are four eyebrow dormers with two-light diamond-leaded panes, some of which are older. A 20th-century enclosed and gabled porch is constructed with matching materials.

The medieval house is divided into three cells, with two storied ends and a central open hall of one-and-a-half bays. The lower half-bay of the hall, which originally contained the entry, has been filled by a large inserted chimney stack with two back-to-back hearths. The tie-beam of the open truss has been cut away, and a beam resting on the brickwork of the stack supports an early 17th-century ceiling that has been inserted into the hall. The exposed main beam and joists feature stop-chamfers and scroll-stops. Diamond mullion housings indicate the positions of the long six-light hall windows in the remaining bay.

At the eastern end of the house, the original ceiling has rough, heavy joists, with signs of a former partition that divided the area into two, as well as a blocked stair trap. There are also indications of a blocked stair trap at the west end. The rafter roof is made from coppice wood, with some smoke-blackening still visible.
