Description
Fernside is a house that is oriented sideways to the street and dates from the 16th century, likely with later alterations. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered and topped with clay pantiles. The house has two storeys and includes an internal chimney stack with a plain rebuilt red brick shaft, along with a lobby entrance.
To the left of the entrance, the upper floor has two old 2-light casement windows with a single horizontal bar in each light. On the right side, there are two similar paired windows, and the ground floor has two 3-light windows in the same style. The gable end has similar casement windows, with 2-light windows on the upper floor and 3-light windows below. The entrance door consists of two long panels and is set within a single-storey enclosed and gabled porch.
Some fallen plaster from the front has revealed good studding and the sill of an original window. The current upper windows have tops that are well below the eaves level, suggesting that the roof may have been raised. Although access was not obtained, previous surveys have noted a massive main beam in the parlour with a 3-inch chamfer, and a poorer, possibly later, main beam in the hall.
