Description

Yew Tree Farm is a former farmhouse, originally the cross-wing of a larger house that extended west. The core of the building dates from the early to mid 16th century, with a two-storey addition from the 19th century. The farmhouse is timber-framed, with some areas plastered and lined to resemble ashlar on the east side. The ground floor is largely rebuilt in colourwashed brick. The roof is covered with concrete plain tiles at the front and black pantiles at the rear.

The jettied gable end facing the road is supported by plain brackets. There are 18th to 19th century small-paned casement windows. An entrance lobby with a gabled porch leads to a mid-20th century plank door. An oriel window sits beneath the jetty, retaining its original sill, but with a later window frame. A 19th-century six-panel door is positioned to the right of the oriel. An internal stack was inserted in the 16th or early 17th century.

A ground floor room adjacent to the jetty features closely-spaced, heavy, plain joists. A partially blocked four-centre arched doorway is visible in the gable end. The chamber above displays fine heavy studding with tension braces. The open roof truss originally had solid arched braces, with one surviving original brace; a similar brace is now visible against the stack in an adjacent truss. The roof structure has oblong, stop-chamfered crown posts and almost solid two-way braces to the collar purlin, providing evidence of a former adjoining range. A good newel stair includes original treads. A medieval moat survives nearby.
