Description

Trophy House, located at 79 and 81 Grinwade Street, is a range of 17th-century timber-framed and plastered buildings arranged in three blocks, featuring 18th-century windows. The structure has two storeys, attics, and cellars, with the upper storey jettied across the entire front.

No 79 has a six-window range with double-hung sashes in cased frames, featuring glazing bars in the first-storey windows and single vertical glazing bars in the ground-storey windows. The upper storey displays a carved bressumer, and the doorway features a six-panel door with reeded architraves. The roof is tiled and continuous with Nos 81 and 83, and includes two flat-headed dormers.

No 81 has a three-window range with double-hung sashes with glazing bars in flush cased frames. It features a ten-panel door with a wooden doorcase that has a shouldered architrave, a pediment on console brackets, and a carved frieze. The upper storey also has a carved bressumer, and the roof is tiled with one gabled dormer.

No 83 has a two-window range with paired double-hung sashes with glazing bars (except for the window at the south end of the ground storey), in flush cased frames. The upper storey features a richly carved bressumer, and there is a six-panel door with the upper panels glazed, framed by a moulded architrave and a cornice on brackets. The roof is tiled with two gabled dormers. Nos 81 and 83 share a continuous coved eaves cornice.

The interiors retain original ceilings decorated with fleur-de-lis and Tudor roses. Nos 77 to 83 form a group with No 68, and also with Nos 119 and 121 (Sorrel Horse Inn) and Nos 123 to 129 on Fore Street.
