Description
No 88 Fore Street is a small timber-framed building dating from the 15th to 16th century, which has been altered in the 17th century and later. It was originally a butcher's shop before becoming part of the Neptune Inn. Now, Nos 86 and 88 are combined into one tenement. The front of No 88 is older than that of No 86 but has undergone significant alterations. The building has two storeys and attics, with an upper storey that jetties out and is supported by curved brackets featuring remnants of a moulded capital and shaft. There is an embattled wall plate. The building has one range of windows, including mullioned and transomed windows with lattice leaded lights—three lights on the ground storey and six on the first storey.
At the rear, a gallery wing extends southward, also with a jettied upper storey and exposed timber-framing on the ground storey. This gallery was originally part of No 90 but is now included in No 88, creating a fine courtyard at the back. The upper storey features a long range of mullioned windows, with the central section being original and the outer sections restored, complete with moulded sills. The ground storey has a doorway with a four-centred arch and carved spandrels. The roof is tiled and includes one gabled dormer at the front.
Nos 80 and 80A, along with Nos 84 to 92 (even), create a notable group of 15th to 17th century timber-framed buildings. This group also connects with Nos 77 to 81 (odd) (The Lord Nelson Inn) and Nos 83 to 91 (odd).
