Description
Cobbolds on the Quay is a public house that was originally part of a maltings kiln. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, although it has earlier origins and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of red brick and features a pantile roof. It has two storeys, with the front facing Wherry Quay showcasing a pair of glazed doors on both floors to the left, and two casements above a low access door to the right. A large kiln vent is visible on the roof. The left side of the building has weatherboarded gable ends and is mostly blank, while the right side connects to the warehouse complex at 80 and 80A Fore Street, which is why it is referred to as the 'kiln block'.
Inside, the building has been converted for its current use, but the circular kiln dates back to the late 18th or early 19th century when the complex was functioning as a maltings. The kiln includes a furnace with two fire holes and a baffle made of metal framing with perforated tiles. The kiln floor consists of perforated tiles, and the kiln hood is made of lath and plaster on a light metal frame that is suspended from the ceiling. There is evidence that the kiln was added to an existing structure, indicating that the conversion of the complex to a maltings involved significant rebuilding and some demolition. This public house was formerly part of the warehouse complex at Nos. 80 and 80A Fore Street and is part of an exceptional group of buildings.
