Description
Nos 87 and 89 Crane Street are a timber-framed building dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, significantly altered in later periods. The building is three storeys high, featuring two gables at the front, with 19th-century bargeboards. The roof is covered in old tiles. The frame is timber, with the upper floors clad in slate.
The right-hand gable has a two-light casement window with round-headed lights featuring early 19th-century gothic glazing. Below each gable on the first floor are late 18th-century canted bay windows, with a fixed three-pane window facing forward and single-pane casement windows on the sides, all set within moulded surrounds, a cornice, and vertical panelled aprons. The ground floor of No 87 has an early 19th-century shop front, while No 89 displays a Victorian shop front with thin colonettes flanking a plate glass window. A range of buildings from the early 18th century is located at the rear of No 87.
The roof structure includes trusses with clasped purlins. Within No 87, the roof exhibits a king post and carved bracing. Nos 87 to 101 (odd) together constitute an important architectural group.
