Description

Nos 52 and 54 on High Street are a pair of buildings dating from the 14th to 15th century, located at a corner site with Crane Street. They are two stories tall with a three-gabled front made of massive timber framing, plaster infilling, and an old tile roof. The upper part of the building is in original condition and slightly overhangs the ground floor, which has been completely altered with plain shop fronts on the north and east sides. Each gable features a three-light leaded casement window. The front facing Crane Street has a similar design but includes additional attic gables, a two-light window for the attic, and another for the first floor. There is a small later painted brick extension on the right side with a 19th-century window. Along Crane Street, there is a single-storey early 19th-century extension that serves as a double shop front, featuring three light thin mullioned windows and a central glazed door. This extension has a Doric pilaster frame, a plain frieze, and a shallow reeded cornice, with a gable end tiled roof. Inside the original building, the roof structure is preserved, showcasing scissor brace trusses, tie beams, purlins, and curved windbraces. The first-floor room has a painted plaster panel. Nos 50 to 58 (even) and No 64 form a group with Nos 37 to 51 (odd).
