Description
Mitre Corner, located at No 37 High Street, is a building dating back to 1594, situated at the corner with New Street. It features a combination of 16th-century origins, with alterations made in the 18th century and later. The structure is three stories tall with an attic, constructed from timber framing that is partly plastered, with a hung tile and colourwashed brick exterior. The roof is made of old tiles and has a gable end facing High Street, with the second floor overhanging on long brackets towards New Street.
The gable includes a small attic window, while the upper floors have two windows, and the ground floor has a plain modern shop front. The windows do not have glazing bars. On the New Street side, there are three windows on the second floor and four on the first floor, positioned at irregular heights. To the right on the ground floor, there is a plain 19th-century shop front featuring a moulded frame and cornice, along with one six-panel door and one four-panel door, both with doorcases that include pilasters and a small cornice. Historically, this site was where Bishop Richard Poore built a house to be close to the Cathedral during its construction. The building is noted for its picturesque appearance.
Nos 37 to 51 (odd) form a group with Nos 50 to 58 (even) and No 64. No 37 also forms a group with Nos 67 to 75 (odd) on New Street.
