Description

No 86 on Crane Street is a Grade II* listed building that dates back to the 16th century, with a 19th-century refronting. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring a painted brick upper floor and a stucco ground floor. The front has a gable with plain bargeboards and superimposed rectangular bay windows on the upper floors, which were added in the late 19th century and have framing applied to the aprons. The ground floor includes a moulded framed sash window without glazing bars and a recessed door with four moulded panels, dating from the mid-19th century, topped by a rectangular fanlight. This door is surrounded by stucco pilasters and a moulded arch with a keystone.

At the rear, there is a 16th-century timber-framed wing that rises three storeys, along with a slightly earlier central cross range that is also timber framed. Some fragmentary timber framing is visible behind the street front. The central cross range extends eastward to No 84, while the west party wall is made of rubble from the 13th century. Inside, the north bedroom at the rear features an exposed mural panel painting with a floral interlace frieze, dating from the 13th century. The north gable end includes a king post and curved braces.

Nos 76 and 82 to 86 form a group.
