Description

Number 97 Crane Street is a late 17th-century and early 18th-century building, originally two storeys with an attic, constructed of colourwashed brick. It has a projecting plinth, stone quoins, a stone band at first-floor level, a plain stone frieze and a small moulded eaves cornice. The roof is hipped and covered in old tiles at a steep pitch, with flanking chimneys. There are three large hipped dormer windows with heavy overhanging moulded cornices, and two-light 19th-century casement windows. The first floor has five tall, narrow windows with moulded architraves and central perpendicular glazing bars. The ground floor has four similar windows, but with the glazing bars removed. The central six-panelled door is topped by a rectangular fanlight (also with removed glazing bars), all within a frame flanked by narrow panelled pilasters with moulded caps. Large carved acanthus scroll brackets support a moulded hood with a panelled soffit and a moulded pediment above the door.

The interior features rail-and-muntin panelling in the hall and front east room – the latter extending from floor to ceiling. The first-floor room has fielded panelling with a moulded dado. A fine, painted overmantel by Francis Barlow is also present. A good staircase incorporates turned balusters, fluted and reeded newels, and panelling to the well, including pilasters.

Numbers 87 to 101 (odd) form a significant architectural group.
