Description

This is a two-storey house on Crane Street, dating mostly from around 1812. It was originally part of number 97, but became a separate unit around 1812. The exterior is stuccoed with a projecting plinth, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The roof is likely slate. There are three windows on the first floor. The ground floor has two windows and a front door on the left-hand side. The front door is made of six panels and has a three-centred arched fanlight with radiating and wreathed detail. It is deeply recessed with flush panelled reveals, set within a slightly projecting surround featuring panelled pilasters supporting flat, reeded and rosetted brackets, topped with a flat, moulded cornice hood. The spandrels of the surround have fluted, fan-shaped ornament. The two ground-floor windows have contemporary wrought iron scroll guards. A small, modern window has been inserted to the left of the doorway. Inside, there’s a curved staircase with a plain, slender contemporary balustrade and handrail. A good Regency fireplace and a French window with a frame of pilasters featuring Regency incised decoration are also present. The house contributes to an important group of buildings with numbers 87 to 101.
