Description

Staynings, located at 93 Crane Street, is an early 18th-century building that stands two stories tall with an attic. It is constructed of brick and features a projecting plinth, stone quoins, and a moulded stone string at the first-floor level. The eaves cornice is moulded and coved, and the roof is covered with old tiles, hipped to the right.

In the approximate center of the house, there is a two-story projecting bay. The first floor has two windows to the left of the bay with contemporary glazing, one window in the projecting bay (which has had its glazing bars removed), and three 18th-century windows to the right, including one narrow window next to the bay. The ground floor has two windows, one of which is a former doorway, along with a doorway in the bay that features a six-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, arched and radiating glazing, and a moulded architrave frame. This doorway is supported by two heavy carved acanthus scroll brackets that hold up a flat moulded hood with a panelled soffit.

Inside, the building boasts a fine staircase with trussed balusters and a heavy moulded handrail. The hall and ground floor rooms are adorned with good fielded panelling, while the first floor features more fielded panelling and well-decorated stucco cornices. The rear room has Jacobean-style panelling, likely added in the early 20th century, along with an overmantel that may include reset original parts.

Staynings is part of an important group of buildings that includes Nos 87 to 101 (odd).
