Description
No. 88 High Street is a shop that dates back to the 15th century or earlier. It features a timber-frame construction with render and plain tile gabled roofs. The building has two storeys, with the part to the north-west having a higher eaves line that aligns with No. 86. The exterior includes a two-window range, with the first floor displaying two flush horizontal-sliding casement windows that have moulded surrounds and small panes. The ground floor features a 19th-century shop front with a tall fascia and a recessed entrance. There is also a passage entrance to the north-west, which has an early 19th-century moulded flat canopy supported by thin pilasters and a four-panel door.
Inside, the south-east part of the building, which has lower eaves, was originally part of the timber-framed structure that connected with No. 90. This section includes two tie beams that are now located in No. 90 and may have formed an open hall from the 15th century or earlier. The north-west part was once a small timber-framed cross-wing, of which the other half is now part of No. 86. This cross-wing features widely spaced studs and an external curved wall brace on the south-east side. The central tie beam in this section has been cut flush with the roof plate.
