Description

No. 86 High Street is a shop that dates back to the 17th century, and possibly even earlier. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, topped with plain tile roofs, and has a large chimney stack at the junction of the two roofs. The building is arranged in a cross-wing and 'hall' format, linking with No. 88 next door.

The exterior consists of two storeys. The cross-wing has gables at both the front and back, adorned with original moulded barge-boards. On the first floor, there is a flush 16-pane sash window with a moulded surround. The first floor also jetties out, supported by one original jetty bracket, with smaller 19th-century replicas on either side of a 20th-century plate-glass door. There is an off-centre canted plate-glass bay window as well. The hall section features a similar sash window on the first floor and a canted flat-roofed bay window with plate glass on the ground floor. The north-east flank includes a two-light window with an iron casement, leaded lights, and one fixed single pane. At the rear, there is a 19th-century two-storey extension made of Flemish-bond red brick with a hipped tile roof. The flank of this extension is now painted, and there is a lean-to catslide roof over part of the hall range.

Inside, the cross-wing is likely from the 17th century and has two bays with widely spaced studs. The adjoining section is part of a 15th-century cross-wing, which is also seen in No. 88, and has been later adapted to serve as a hall.
