Description

4 and 6 Market Street are shops located in Wymondham, dating from the early 17th century and enlarged around 1700, with alterations made particularly in the late 20th century. The buildings are timber-framed with a brick exterior and feature a plaintiled roof with pantiles on the rear cross wings. They are two storeys high with a dormer attic.

No. 4 has a 20th-century plate glass shop front and door beneath a jetty, along with a large glazed window on the first floor. No. 6 is also jettied and consists of three bays. It has a central door set within panelled reveals, flanked by a sash window on each side, both with glazing bars. The first floor features false studwork and is lit by two renewed two-light cross casements. To the east, there is a carriage entrance to a passage, also under a jetty. The buildings have a continuous gabled roof with three gabled dormers and an internal gable end stack on the west side.

The east side of the main cross wing is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a ground floor made of brick. There are three sash windows on each floor, although the top left window has been replaced. The gabled roof has a stepped south gable that carries an internal stack, with a ridge stack located to the right of centre. An early 19th-century outshut is present in the entrance angle. The west side retains an early 18th-century sash window with glazing bars and a flush frame on the first floor.

The interior of No. 6 has not been inspected. The ground floor of No. 4 was opened up in 1988-89, leaving only a cut-down fireplace bressumer and sunk quadrant mouldings, with a winder staircase located south of the stack. The roof features two tiers of staggered butt purlins, which have been partially rebuilt.
