Description
No. 3 Market Street is a house and shop, now used solely for commercial purposes. It dates from the early 16th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is timber-framed with brick and features a roof made of black glazed pantiles. It has two storeys and a 19th-century butcher's shop front, which is accessed through central late 17th-century double-leaf panelled doors. Above the door is a 17th-century light with a central roundel and radial glazing bars, along with ventilation grills over the windows. There are additional display windows to the right. The first floor jetties out and shows exposed studwork, with three 3-light late 18th-century casements that have metal openings. The roof is gabled and bell-based, with an internal gable-end stack on the west side. A passage to the left of the elevation leads to the rear of the property, which features a two-storey gabled cross wing with a brick skin and 18th-century sash windows that have glazing bars. North of this is a timber-framed lower hall range with an underbuilt jetty. To the left of the central door is a 5-light ovolo-moulded timber mullioned window, while to the right is a 3-light 18th-century casement. The first floor is lit by two projecting windows; the left window has a 5-light transomed ovolo-mullioned window, and the right-hand window has been blocked with a later casement. The roof is gabled. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of considerable interest.
