Description
2 and 4 Middleton Street are two shops with flats, dating from the mid-17th century and later. The building features a rendered and colourwashed timber frame, topped with a roof of black glazed corrugated tiles. It stands two storeys high and has two mid-19th century plate-glass shop fronts, each with four-centred heads to the stiles. There is a doorway into number 2 to the left of the display window, while the entrance to number 4 is in the centre of a double front. Between the shops is a half-glazed door that formerly led to chambers above. The first floor jetties out and includes two mid-18th century sash windows with glazing bars. The roof is bell-based and gabled, with an external gable-end stack on the east side. At the rear, there is a cross wing constructed of brick or a brick skin, also two storeys high, with a red pantile roof. Inside, there are chamfered bridging beams with tongue stops and various boxed bridging beams. The first floors are not accessible but are likely to contain more interesting features.
