Description
No 106 High Street is a 15th and 16th century timber-framed and plastered building with a long south-facing frontage on St Michael's Lane. It has been altered in the 18th century and later. The eastern half, facing St Michael's Lane, dates from the 15th century and is two storeys high with attics and cellars, featuring an upper storey that jetties out, supported by one remaining curved bracket. The western part of the building is late 16th century and has three storeys. The west front is double-jettied, but the ground storey has been underbuilt by a 20th-century shop.
The 18th-century fenestration includes a two-window range on the first storey of the west front and a five-window range overall on the south front, featuring double-hung sashes with glazing bars in flush cased frames. At the north end, there is a passageway with remains of moulded jambs from an original doorway and an original battened door. The rear part of the upper storey jetties out with an overhang of about 7½ feet, supported by a moulded bressumer, curved braces, and wall posts.
No 106 forms part of a group with Nos 90 to 96 (even), 100, 102, 106, and 112, alongside Nos 73 to 77 (odd).
