Description

Number 77 is a building located on the north-west side of High Street in Braintree. It dates from the 15th or early 16th century and features a timber-framed and plastered structure that has been altered in the 18th century and later restored in an 18th-century style on the south-east front. This façade includes plaster panels on the upper storey.

The first storey has two large, slightly projecting mullioned and transomed windows, which have glazing bars and semi-circular arched centre lights. Above these windows, there is a cornice and frieze. The ground storey features 20th-century shop fronts, also with a cornice and frieze above the shop windows.

At the rear, a long wing extends north-west, accessible by a carriageway at the north end and a covered passageway at the south end. This passageway showcases exposed timber framing and a 4-centred archway with chamfered orders. The rear wing is two storeys high, with exposed timber framing on the first storey on both sides. On the south-west side, the first storey windows are horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars, while the ground storey has double-hung sashes. On the north-east side, there are double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The main block has a slate roof, while the rear is tiled.

Number 77, along with Nos 73 to 77, forms a group with Nos 90 to 96 (even), 100, 102, 106, and 112.
