Description
This is a 15th-century timber-framed building that was refronted in the 18th century, retaining some original features. It is two storeys with an attic, and has three windows and three dormers. The ground floor is painted brick, with plastered upper floors. An eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and the roof is tiled. Original glazing bars are intact throughout the windows.
Number 3 has a charming 18th-century curved shop window with intact glazing bars; below it is a scrolled wrought iron grille used as a goods shoot. There is a doorway on either side of the shop window: the southern doorway leads to the dwelling house above and has a small, rectangular fanlight, while the northern doorway is a double door providing access to the shop. Number 4 has a doorway with fluted pilasters and a door consisting of six moulded panels, with the top two panels cut away and glazed. Both properties are now in good condition.
Numbers 3 to 12 Abbey Street form a notable group.
