Description

Bethesda Baptist Church is a monumental stone church built in 1912 in a classical style, designed by F G Faunch. It features a balustraded parapet and a modillion cornice. The front of the church has a tall Ionic portico with plain polished granite columns that rise through two storeys, topped by a modillion pediment, which serves as a prominent feature at the end of Northgate Street. The building has two storeys, with five windows on the front and eight on the sides, separated by pilasters and flanked by double corner Ionic pilasters. The windows are double-hung sashes, some of which have glazing bars. The upper storey windows on the front have semi-circular heads, and the outer windows are adorned with pediments on console brackets. The ground storey features a central six-panel door with a rusticated arch, flanked by two outer doorways that have segmental pediments on console brackets. These doorways are accessed by a broad flight of steps that spans the entire front. On the west side, there is a single-storey wing with a panelled parapet, cornice, and pilasters, which has five windows on the west side and two on the south side, all double-hung sashes (with glazing bars on the west side). The centre window in this wing has grouped triple lights with semi-circular heads and a large central light. The roofs are slate. Bethesda Baptist Church and Nos 9 and 11 form a group with Nos 5 to 27 (odd) on Fonnereau Road.
