Description

No 24 St Margaret's Plain is a 15th to 16th century timber-framed and plastered building featuring a gabled front and a jettied upper storey on both fronts, showcasing exposed timber-framing. It stands two storeys tall with a four-window range on the north front, which includes mullioned casements with lattice leaded lights and moulded sills. The west front has an oriel bay window on the first storey, also with mullioned casements, lattice leaded lights, arched heads, and moulded sills. The jettied upper storey, supported by curved brackets and carved shafts, reveals exposed joists and a carved corner post. The ground storey on the north side features 20th-century arched windows in a period style set between the shafts. The west front displays a jettied gable with an embattled bressumer and finely carved bargeboards, along with a 20th-century oriel shop window in a period style. Inside, there are some well-crafted moulded ceiling beams, and the roof is tiled. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 8 (even), No 1 (Lodge to Christchurch Mansion), the entrance wall and gates to Christchurch Park, and the brick wall to St Margaret's Churchyard, along with Nos 56 and 58 (Cafe Blanchfleur) on St Margaret's Street.
