Description

The New Jerusalem Church, also known as the Swedenborgian Church, is located at 17 George Street and was built in 1810, with some alterations made in 1868 and small additions in the 20th century. This is a two-storey, three-bay, rectangular-plan classical church featuring pedimented gables, tall rectangular windows, and bays separated by plain pilasters. The front elevation is constructed of painted droved sandstone ashlar, while the side elevations are rendered, with painted polished sandstone ashlar dressings. It has a base course, an eaves course, raised tabbed window margins on the front elevation and upper floor of the side elevations, plain raised ashlar margins on the lower side elevations and rear, and round-arched windows at the rear.

The principal gabled elevation faces north and includes a two-leaf timber panelled front door set in a round-arch stop-chamfered recess, featuring a prominent keystone with the monogram N J C and an arched foliate band supported by decorative brackets. The fenestration is regular, with taller windows in the outer bays and a blind oculus in the pediment. The side elevations to the east and west have possibly later paired windows at ground level and tall windows on the upper floor. The south elevation has five round-arched windows on the upper floor and a pedimented gable with an oculus. There are two small 20th century outshots on the west and south sides.

Additional features include border-glazed lights, ashlar-coped skews, and short gablehead stacks with yellow clay cans, all topped with a slate roof.

Inside, the church features an upper hall, while the lower floor contains a church hall, meeting room, kitchen, and Warden's flat. The church hall is a large room with decorative cornicing and ceiling roses, and a table pulpit set behind a depressed arch supported by slender Corinthian pilasters. There are three round-arched lights at the rear of the recess, flanked by very elongated half columns, and stained glass by W and J J Kier designed by Sir Noel Paton. An organ is positioned to the left of the pulpit recess. The lower floor is split-level, with the kitchen and office closest to the front door and the hall five steps down, featuring timber-boarded panelling to the dado.

The property is enclosed by a coped whinstone boundary wall to the west and south, along with flower-headed cast-iron railings and a gate to the north, which encloses a small garden.
