Description

County Primary School is a primary school built in 1845 by John Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. The right-hand wing was altered in the early 20th century and has mid-20th century additions. The building features roughcast render on brick with applied timbering and has a thatched roof, except for the right wing which has a plain tiled roof. It is designed in a picturesque style.

The school consists of a 2-storey octagonal central block, which was formerly the schoolmaster's house. Attached to this central block are two school rooms on either side, with smaller wings at the front and rear that were originally the entrance porch and the schoolmaster's sitting room. The windows are mullion and transom casement types, many of which still have their original lead lattice cames. The right wing has later small-paned casement windows, primarily as half-dormers. There is a small gabled open timber porch on the left wing.

The four shorter faces of the central block are gabled, each featuring a 4-light window on the ground floor and a 2-light window on the first floor. This block has two stacks with groups of enriched circular flues, one located at the roof apex, along with three other stacks, two of which have been rebuilt in a plain style. The school is part of the planned estate village built around the green for Sir Morton Peto, designed by Thomas.
