Description
Nos. 7 and 8 on The Green are a pair of estate cottages built around 1850. They are constructed of red brick, with the upper floor featuring pebbledash rendering and some applied timbering that is partially missing. The cottages have a thatched roof and display a picturesque style with an asymmetrical form, characterized by two half-hipped gables at the front and a similar gable at the right end.
The buildings are two storeys high and have casement windows set under segmental arches, with original lead lattice cames visible only in the upper parts of each light. There is one half-dormer and two doorways, each featuring a boarded door and a half-hipped thatched porch supported by timber posts. The doorway to No. 7 is located in the side wall. The cottages also have bargeboards with pierced lobes and three red brick stacks with grouped flues, mostly arranged in a diamond pattern.
These cottages are part of a model village of estate workers' homes built around the green for Sir Morton Peto, designed by John Thomas.
