Description
Nos. 17 and 17A on The Green are a pair of estate cottages built around 1850. They are constructed of pale yellow brick, featuring a slightly projecting upper floor that has mid-20th century smooth render and applied timbering. The roof is covered with mid-20th century concrete plain tiles and is designed in a picturesque style with an asymmetrical form, including a gable on the left that is set slightly forward. The cottages are two storeys high and have mullion and transom casement windows, with original lead lattice cames remaining only in the upper part of each light. There are two gabled half-dormers and two doorways, one at the front and one in the left return wall, each with a gabled open timber porch and a boarded door. The buildings feature three stacks, two of which have grouped flues arranged mainly in a diamond pattern, while one at the rear has been rebuilt in a plain style. These cottages are included for their group value as part of the model village of estate workers' cottages built around the green for Sir Morton Peto, designed by John Thomas.
