Description
The Old Farmhouse is a former farmhouse with an 18th-century core that underwent significant alterations around 1850 by John Thomas, who converted it into a pair of estate cottages. It was later converted back into a single dwelling in the mid-20th century. The building features whitewashed brick and a roof made of glazed pantiles, showcasing a picturesque style. It is 1½ storeys tall and has three windows, which are two-light casements with leaded lattice panes set beneath segmental arches. The upper windows are gabled half-dormers, while the gable windows facing the green were added in the mid-20th century but match the original style. The doorway is asymmetrical and includes a gabled timber porch with a mid-20th-century door. The main gables have wavy bargeboards, and there is an internal stack with a group of five tall square flues. This house is the only older structure incorporated into the model village of estate workers' cottages built around the green for Sir Morton Peto, designed by Thomas.
