Description
Nos. 5 and 6 on The Green are a pair of estate cottages built around 1850. They are constructed of red brick with yellow brick dressings and feature a raised brick course at the first floor level, topped with clay pantiles. The cottages are designed in a picturesque style and are symmetrical to the green, with a hipped-roof block that is set forward. They have two storeys and two windows, which are mullion and transom casements under segmental arches. The original lead lattice cames are still visible in the upper part of each light. The upper windows are gabled half-dormers. Each recessed section of the facade has a shallow-arched doorway with a boarded door. There is a central rectangular stack made of yellow brick with grouped flues, and a second matching stack is located at the rear. These cottages are part of a model village of estate workers' cottages built around the green for Sir Morton Peto, designed by John Thomas. They are almost identical to Nos. 15 and 16 on The Green.
