Description
Numbers 1 and 2 (Sonita) are a pair of estate cottages built around 1850. They are constructed of yellow brick, with the slightly projecting upper floor finished in pebbledash render and applied timbering. The cottages feature a thatched roof and are designed in a picturesque style with an asymmetrical form, including a gable on the right that is set slightly forward.
The buildings are two storeys tall and have mullion and transom casement windows beneath flat arches, with the original lead lattice cames still visible in the upper part of each light. There are two half-dormers, which were originally gabled, and two doorways: one at the front and one in the right side wall. Each doorway has a gabled open timber porch, with one door being boarded and the other glazed. The gables are adorned with shaped bargeboards, and there are three stacks with grouped flues, mostly arranged in a diamond pattern.
These cottages are part of a model village of estate workers' homes built around the green for Sir Morton Peto, designed by John Thomas.
