Description
Numbers 23 The Green and 1 The Street are two estate cottages originally built as three around 1850. They are constructed of yellow brick, featuring a slightly projecting upper floor with mid-20th century smooth render and applied timbering, topped with a thatched roof in a picturesque style. The building is symmetrical around the corner, with a square corner block that has chamfered angles and a conical roof. Two wings with half-hipped gables are attached by short links. The cottages are two storeys high, with mullion and transom casement windows that have segmental arches made of pale yellow brick; only the original lead lattice cames remain in the upper part of each window light. One doorway is located on the corner, featuring a half-hipped open timber porch. Two other doorways in the side walls of the wings have been blocked, but their porches still exist. There are two stacks with grouped flues and a single flue at the apex of the corner block. This building is part of the model village of estate workers' cottages built around the green for Sir Morton Peto, designed by John Thomas.
