Description
The Grammar School is a former school founded in 1540 by Sir Rowland Morton. The current building dates from the 17th century, with significant brick reconstruction on the east side in the late 19th century. It features a timber-frame structure with brick infill and refacing, a sandstone plinth, and a slate roof. The building has four framed bays aligned north to south, with the northern end adjoining a gatehouse. There is a lateral stack on the east side, and the entrance is located at the northern end of the east side. The east side also has two large 19th-century windows with six divisions on either side of the stack, and a ledged door to the right. The framing is visible on the west side, showing three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate. The school is prominently situated facing the churchyard.
