Description
The Bell Inn is a public house that possibly dates from the 15th century, with later additions and alterations from the 17th century, and an early 19th-century addition that has been altered in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed, with largely painted brick infill and refacing, and a painted brick addition from the 19th century, topped with tiled roofs.
The original structure consists of a hall and cross-wing facing north, featuring a through-passage that backs onto a stack. The entrance is now located in the adjoining 19th-century building to the right. The inn is two storeys high with irregular window placement. The first floor of the main block has a three-light casement window, while the ground floor has two two-light glazing bar casement windows and an unused four-panelled door to the right. The gable end of the cross-wing to the right has a large 24-pane glazing bar sash window, and a multi-paned 20th-century window on the ground floor. The current entrance in the adjoining 19th-century building features a dentilled eaves cornice and two glazing bar sash windows, with a single vertical glazing bar sash window to the right of a lean-to porch that has a part-glazed panelled door on the ground floor.
The framing includes irregular square panelling that has been refaced on the ground floor, and close-studding in the gable of the cross-wing, which retains fragments of barge-board with running tracery and sexfoil panels. The interior has been altered in the 20th century but contains deeply chamfered beams in the main block.
