Description

Oakley Cottage and Lichen Cottage are a house, originally probably dating from the 15th century, that has been altered in the 20th century and is now divided into two tenements. The building is timber-framed with painted brick infill, largely refaced with brick and painted sandstone rubble, and has sandstone stacks with brick shafts. The original layout was a central hall with flanking cross-wings, facing north. The left side is now Oakley Cottage, and the right side is Lichen Cottage. Entrances are now located in the gable ends of the cross-wings. A stack is situated on the west end, and another rear lateral stack is on the central block.

The two-storey building has a gable-end to the left cross-wing, with a three-light casement window on the first floor and a two-light window above a ledged door to the right. The central block has been completely refaced with brick, and contains two two-light 20th-century windows on the first floor and a similar window on the ground floor. The gable-end of the right cross-wing has a three-light casement window, and a bay window to the right of a recessed doorway with a panelled door.

The timber framing is largely complete in the cross-wings, with close studding visible above the ground floor refacing. Fragments of decorative bargeboard remain on the gable end of the left cross-wing.
