Description
Lower Barn, located immediately southwest of Whitehouse Farmhouse, is a barn that was originally likely a house. It dates from the 16th century or early 17th century, with later additions. The structure is timber-framed and weatherboarded, standing on a brick plinth, and features a gable-ended pantile roof.
The barn has five bays, with the three bays on the right (west) being narrower. There are later outshuts on the front left and at the right-hand end. The north front includes an outshut on the left, which is weatherboarded and has a pantile lean-to roof. The west end has an outshut with a corrugated iron roof, and at the rear, there is a large 20th-century lean-to roof also made of corrugated iron.
Inside, the barn retains close-studded wall panels, a mid rail, tension braces, wall and sole plates, slightly jowled wall posts, and tie beams (some of which are cambered). However, the braces below the tie beams have been replaced with curved brackets, and the roof structure above is a later, lighter queen-post design. There are first and second floor mullion windows on the north and south walls, but the first floor of the house has been removed.
