Description
Culpho Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse featuring two storeys and attics in its main range, designed with a basic two-cell lobby-entrance plan. The structure is timber-framed and faced in 19th-century red brick, with flat pilasters at the corners, and has clay pantiles for roofing. To the left, there is a lower section that was originally a single storey but has been raised to 1½ storeys and is now rendered. The farmhouse has an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft and a small external stack on the left side made of small Tudor bricks. Windows include 2-light and 3-light plain casements from the 20th century, along with one large 20th-century gabled dormer. The entrance door leads into a small 20th-century gabled red brick extension that also contains a stair.
Inside, all timbers are exposed on the ground floor, with main components visible above. The interior features good quality plain studding, reversed braces, joists set flat, and main beams with chamfer and ogee stops. There are two restored open fireplaces with timber lintels. The original lobby entrance has been blocked, and the associated newel stair has been removed on the ground and first floors, although a section remains from the first floor to the attic. On the upper floor, there is a blocked original 3-light window with moulded mullions visible within the plaster. The upper ceilings are original and exceptionally heavily timbered, while the roofs have been renewed. The lower section on the left of the front was added in the late 17th or early 18th century as a heated service room, featuring joists set on edge, with an upper storey added in the 20th century.
