Description
White House Farmhouse is a mid-16th century farmhouse featuring two storeys and attics, designed with a three-cell plan. The structure is timber-framed, plastered, and lined, with a red brick gable on the west side. On the east side, there is a single-storey red brick bay that has a moulded plaster cornice extending from the gable wall. Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft, and the building includes various casement and sash windows. A 20th-century porch and door have been added.
The interior showcases exposed timbers, with a basic five-bay internal chimney and cross-entry form that appears to have been altered, likely in the late 17th century, by extending the service end of the house. The parlour, located at the east end, features ogee-moulded joists, a fireplace with an arched brick surround, and indications of former diamond mullioned windows. The two-bay hall has similar moulded joists and a plain chamfered main beam. Although there are suggestions that some joists may be reused, they generally fit their current positions.
The service-end partition remains somewhat fragmentary but is still in place, showing evidence of two doorways. The cross-entry has been relocated to the enlarged service area, which also includes a straight flight of stairs with solid treads that span the width of the house. The upper floor retains remnants of several blocked diamond mullioned windows, shaped post-heads with arched braces that have been removed, and reversed braces at the corners. An original fireplace is present in the room above the parlour, and the roof is supported by side purlins.
