Description
Merriewinds is a former farmhouse dating from the early 16th century. It is 1½ storeys high and has a three-cell layout. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with ashlar lining, and is covered with clay pantiles. There is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. The house features old three-light casement windows and two large gabled dormers. There are two plank doors, one of which has ornate ironwork.
On the west side, there is a timber-framed extension with a slightly lower roofline, faced in 19th-century red brick, which includes slatted windows in segmental-arched openings. To the south, there is a small single-storey red brick extension. The frame of the main range consists of six bays, including a narrow chimney bay, with plain, heavy timbers exposed, although the development is not entirely clear. The two-bay room at the east end has a main beam with chamfer and ogee stops with a bar, and an open fireplace with a timber lintel. During restoration of the house some years ago, the site of a medieval open hearth was uncovered.
