Description
Moat Farmhouse is an early 16th and early 17th century farmhouse. The older part is one-and-a-half storeys high, while the later addition is two storeys with attics. The original structure is timber-framed and has been rendered, with 20th century concrete pantiles on the roof; the front slope of the earlier range also has concrete pantiles. The farmhouse features an internal chimney stack with a square shaft, a moulded string course, and a central projecting pilaster strip. Most of the windows are casement windows, mainly with three lights and a single horizontal bar.
The original range represents two-and-a-half bays of a small house, featuring a two-bay open hall. The roof has clasped purlins, no principals, and deep, cambered collars, with significant smoke-blackening around the open truss and scattered throughout the rest of the roof. Three tie-beams have been cut away, and a section of wallplate along the back wall has been turned 90 degrees, displaying housings for studding and evidence of a former four-light diamond-mullioned window. Originally, an additional bay beyond the hall contained a dairy with a cheese chamber above. The 17th century extension is a typical parlour extension and retains the original upper ceiling and attic, with ovolo moulding to the main ground floor ceiling beam. A 20th century extension now sits in front of this range.
