Description

The Readery is a 16th-century house located on Castle Street in Framlingham. It has two storeys and attics, featuring a timber-framed and plastered structure with a plain tiled roof and a coved cornice. There is a brick extension on the right side of the building. An internal chimney stack is present, with a plain red brick shaft. The house has three windows: one 2-light and two 3-light casements with leaded panes. A notable feature is the two-storey gabled and enclosed entrance porch, which includes an upper room. The entrance has a recessed six-panel door with raised fielded panels and a panelled surround. Additionally, a flat-roofed bay window projects from the right side at the angle of the porch and front. Historically, this building served as the residence of the Reader at St. Michael's Church, a position established by an endowment in the will of Sir Robert Hitcham, who died in 1636. Access to the interior was not obtained.
