Description

Dial Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century, with 20th-century extensions. It is timber-framed and rendered, featuring incised panels and a thatched roof. The building is 1½ storeys high and has an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. The layout consists of a 2-cell plan. The cottage has 2-light plain casement windows from the 20th century, and the original lobby entry has been blocked. The current entrance is through a small enclosed porch added at the left end. There is also a single-storey lean-to extending along the entire rear wall.

Inside, the frame is fully exposed, with all sills raised. The substantial, widely spaced full-height studding and main beams feature a wide chamfer and curved stops, which are unusually incised with a cross saltire. The joists are chamfered with stepped stops, and there are plain timber lintels above two ground floor fireplaces. The cottage consists of four bays, including a chimney bay, with good Tudor brickwork on the stack and an associated newel stair. The tie beams on either side of the stack are low, and one has been removed. In the two-bay room to the right of the stack, the open truss has a low collar of deep section instead of a tie beam. There are remains of several original windows, including a 5-light window with hollow-chamfered mullions on the rear wall of the upper room to the left of the stack. The roof features clasped purlins, which are ceiled off at collar level.
