Description

Yew Tree Cottage is a house dating from around 1600. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered and lined with ashlar, topped with clay pantiles. The cottage has one and a half storeys and follows a basic two-cell lobby-entrance layout, with a third unit added in the mid-17th century. The internal chimney stack has a plain rebuilt red brick shaft.

The exterior includes three gabled dormers with plain bargeboards; two of these dormers have old three-light casement windows with square leading and pintle hinges. On the ground floor, there are two old three-light casement windows with transoms and one 20th-century two-light standard replacement. The main entrance door features six flush panels, with the top two being glazed, and is framed by jambs and a flat pediment with bolection moulding. There is also a plank door on the right side.

Inside, the plain interior reveals some exposed timbering, including chamfered main beams with lamb's tongue stops and one open fireplace with a plain timber lintel. Notably, there are no tie-beams at the wallplate level on the internal trusses, and the former end tie on the right has been cut through to connect with the later end bay. A four-light window in the right gable wall is blocked and features square mullions and glazing bars between. The roof over the original section has principal rafters, while a 20th-century replacement is above the extension.
