Description

Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Guildhall is a row of three cottages, originally part of a single building, dating from the 16th century. The structure is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a plaintiled roof that is hipped on the left and gabled on the right. It has two storeys and consists of six bays. There are two internal red brick chimney-stacks; one is 16th century with four attached rectangular shafts set diagonally on a rectangular base, while the other is a later addition with a high plain square shaft. Both chimneys appear to be insertions from the inside.

The exterior features various 20th-century casement windows, some of which are small-paned, and four plank doors that are irregularly spaced. A fire insurance sign is visible on the upper front wall. Inside, the building boasts high-quality, very heavy timberwork. The exposed ground-floor ceilings have main beams with 3 to 4-inch chamfers and triangle stops, along with wide closely-spaced unchamfered joists. At the west end of No. 1, there is evidence of a service-end arrangement, including doorways, a dividing partition, and a slide for a blocked window on the rear wall. The exposed studding in this bay shows very closely-spaced studs. On the upper floor, there are tie-beams without braces and a roof supported by principal rafters.

Documentary evidence suggests this building may have been a rebuilding on the site of the former parish guildhall, but the quality of the structure indicates it is more likely a conversion of the Guildhall building itself.
