Description
Holland Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. The cottage has three bays facing southwest, with a central stack that creates a lobby-entrance. There is a 20th-century extension at the rear. The building is one storey high with attics, featuring two 20th-century casement windows and two additional casements in gabled dormers. The front door has four narrow vertical panels and a four-centred head, set within a 19th-century Gothic Revival porch made of red brick in Flemish bond, with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. A date of 1589 is inscribed in modern plaster on the left dormer. The structure displays close studding with chisel-cut carpenter's assembly marks, primary straight bracing, and face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates. The right bay features a chamfered axial beam and chamfered joists of horizontal section, all with lamb's tongue and roll stops. The left bay has a chamfered beam with lamb's tongue stops, plain square joists in front, and chamfered joists of horizontal section with lamb's tongue stops behind it. The roof has clasped purlins, and the hearths have been significantly altered.
