Description

This house, dating to circa 1700, was altered in the 19th century. It is timber-framed, with a plastered interior and a painted brick facade in a Flemish bond pattern, topped with handmade red clay tiles. The house faces north-west with three bays and a chimney stack behind the central bay, creating a lobby entrance. It has two storeys. The ground floor features two early 19th-century sash windows with 12 panes to each sash. The first floor has two late 19th-century sashes, each with 3 panes over 6. A six-panel door is set within a fluted doorcase featuring a flat canopy supported by scrolled brackets, also dating to the early 19th century. The brick facade, constructed around 1840, projects slightly forward of the doorcase. The left bay contains a large wood-burning hearth and a chamfered axial beam without stops, alongside plain, vertically sectioned joists. The right bay has a smaller wood-burning hearth, a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, and similar joists. The timber frame exhibits primary straight bracing. An original winder staircase is located in front of the stack, with a moulded handrail of vertical section and splat balusters at the top. On the first floor, there is a small, altered wrought iron coal-burning grate. The house represents group value as an example of vernacular architecture in a historic setting.
