Description
Oakley Cottage is a 17th and 18th century cottage located on the south-east side of Pest House Lane, Great Oakley. It is timber framed, with a primarily plastered facade finished in red brick in a stretcher bond pattern, and has a thatched roof. The cottage originally comprised two bays facing southeast, featuring an internal stack at the right end and a 20th century external stack against it. A single-storey 20th century extension has been added to the right, and a rear outshut, forming a catslide roof, was built in the 18th or 19th century. The cottage has one storey with an attic. Windows are 20th century casements, and there is a 20th century glazed door within a glazed lean-to porch or conservatory. The roof is of a clasped purlin design. Records suggest the cottage was documented as early as 1631, although this has not been examined.
