Description

50-56 Damgate Street is a terrace of four houses, originally two, built in the early 18th century. The houses are constructed of colourwashed brick and topped with a pantile roof. They are two storeys high and feature two pairs of doors on either side of the front elevation, all of which are plank doors except for a 20th-century door at number 50. There are pilaster strips flanking the elevation on both sides. To the right of number 50, there is a 19th-century shop display window. The ground floor has three renewed casement windows beneath segmental heads, with a blind window in the centre. The first floor has four three-light mid-18th century casements separated by blind windows, a platband, and a dentil eaves cornice. The roof is gabled with a central ridge stack and internal gable-end stacks on both the north and south sides. The north gable head features tumbling. At the rear, there are two-storey outshuts on the right and left, with a single-storey outshut between them, dating from the 19th century.

The interior of number 54 includes a rebuilt fireplace in the north wall of the ground-floor room, complete with a firehood. The first floor has studwork partitions, with the south wall of studs closing off a former access point to what is now number 56. There are winder staircases by the stacks.
