Description
58 Damgate Street is a shop that has been converted into a domestic residence. It dates from the mid-18th century and was altered in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick and features a pantiled roof. It stands two storeys high and has three bays. The central entrance is a recessed 20th-century glazed door, flanked by a bowed three-light shop display window on either side. The doorway recess is highlighted by an overlight, and there are side windows in the recess. On the first floor, there are two repaired 18th-century three-light casements, with an inset rounded panel and a wrought-iron sign standard between them. The building has a dentil and saw-toothed eaves cornice and a gabled roof. There is an internal gable-end stack to the north, which is shared with No. 56. At the rear, there is a large two-storey 20th-century extension. Inside, there is one tongue-stopped chamfered bridging beam on the ground floor, and several plain-chamfered joists are visible on the first floor. Some elements of the partitioning from when it was a butcher's shop still survive on the ground floor.
