Description
Nos. 68 and 70 Damgate Street are a range of houses with early 16th century origins and later alterations, once continuous with Nos. 64-66. The buildings are timber-framed and brick, likely featuring an underbuilt jetty on the first floor, and are colourwashed. They have a roof made of black glazed pantiles and are two stories tall.
There are two 20th-century doors, with the door to the south (No. 70) having a plastered surround. To the left of each door, there is one three-light late 18th century casement window. A platband is present at the first floor level, where there are also two three-light 18th century casements. The roof is gabled, and there is a central 17th century serrated stack serving the middle houses of the range. An internal gable-end stack to the south was rebuilt in 1979, featuring a stepped gable. At the rear, there is a 19th century brick outshut range.
Inside No. 68, there is a ground-floor bridging beam decorated with roll moulding, which is also repeated on the wall plate on the north side. A winder staircase is located by the stack on the north side. The interior of No. 70 has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
