Description
65 Damgate Street is a house that was formerly known as the Sun Inn, a public house of some fame. The north range dates from the 17th century and was raised with a shaped gable added around 1720. A south extension was added in the late 18th century, and an east extension was added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick and flint, with the early north range thatched and the remainder covered with pantiles.
The north range has two storeys and an attic, with a west gable facing the street that features two bays. There is a late 19th-century panelled door to the right and a 3-light 18th-century transomed casement to the left. Platbands are present on each floor, with two 2-light transomed casements on the first floor and a third in the shaped gable head. The roof is gabled with a ridge stack at the east end, and the east gable is straight.
The late 18th-century extension to the south has two storeys and three window bays, with the centre bay being blind on each floor. Each floor features two 2-light cross casements under segmental heads, and the gabled roof has a south parapet. A datestone in the south gable head is nearly indecipherable but shows "179..." (the owner states it is from 1792, while a previous list noted 1795).
Inside, the north range has a chamfered bridging beam on the ground floor and a wide open fireplace in the east wall, with a winder staircase located on the east side. The roof above the astragal to the stack has been replaced and raised.
